Description Job Summary:

The Specialist, Real Time Power Operations is responsible for learning and effectively handling all of the real-time desk (ERCOT, East and West) trading and dispatch activity in order to provide an effective level of redundancy for all regional operations. Expected to be fully proficient in all aspects of real-time operations, for all regions, and to provide general oversight and review of ongoing issues affecting such operations. Works as part of a team on defined 12-hour shift schedule. Schedules, controls and dispatches output for Calpine’s generating units including conducting commercial transactions in the day-ahead and real-time, performing and monitoring scheduling activities. Assists in the determination of generation requirements to meet obligations through monitoring real-time status information pertaining to available generation to meet Calpine’s obligations, or acting in the capacity of a Generation Coordinator, as appropriate, and identifies excess generation available for the spot market, as appropriate. Communicates unit start up/shut down to plants for the trading organization. Focuses on optimizing economics of owned assets in the real-time and day-ahead environments. Determines what actions to take to ensure reliable operation of the power grid. Communicates with the control area operator/ISO to maintain stability including coordination of communication and data exchange (real-time, day-ahead, and historical) among Calpine’s’ generating plants and customers and regulatory entities. The Specialist will also be responsible to varying degrees for systems development, process improvement, day-ahead bidding, compliance analysis and assessment, asset analysis and reporting, outage optimizations, other ad-hoc analytical and operational requirements of Commercial operations etc.

Job Responsibilities:

•In-depth or broad, extensive knowledge of trading power in the hourly market and broad understanding of combined cycle electrical generating plants including operations, maintenance and performance engineering skills
•Highly skilled professional with wide-ranging, advanced technical experience to resolve complex issues.
•Competent to work at very high level in multiple knowledge areas or functions as an advanced contributor.
•Makes decisions on complex issues regarding project components and advanced tasks. Independently prioritizes and executes responsibilities effectively for multiple desk areas. Results impact daily operations and progress on various sized projects.
•Solves operational problems and associated technical issues; modifies existing tools, techniques or processes. Makes technical decisions and performs escalated or more highly complex work of a similar nature to that for which they oversee.
•Leads the research for innovations from external sources, and identifies opportunities to develop new processes, tools, services and techniques within the function.
• Works on complex issues and projects.
•Uses independent judgment requiring in-depth evaluation of variable factors.
•Independently selects methods, techniques, analytical approach and evaluation criteria.
• Determines methods and procedures for new assignments.
•Serves as project/technical lead on medium to large projects; regularly coordinates work of professionals, technicians and others outside of own department.
•Trains and mentors employees on technical skills.
•Collaborate and solve problems – works with others to resolve significant issues, clarify or interpret complex information, provide initial screening/negotiations.
Requirements •Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent; Master’s degree a plus; typically requires 5+ years experience in the energy sector; preferably with experience related to commercial operations, generation dispatching or generation asset management or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience; In-depth experience across knowledge areas, including project management a plus.
•NERC System Operator certification or higher required.
